Love At First Sight: A Poem

Yubaba, the witch from Spirited Away.
Yubaba, the witch from Spirited Away.

The Witch's home is full of lavish designs

In her ears, precious earrings of gold rest, meaning

balance, dignity, pride.

Everything about her place of residence seems obsessed with having the most.

She has an answer for everything,

she probably has a charm for this, a feng shui remedy for that.

You could say she was wise.

Or just old. And sure of herself.

Her bold, colorful rings, you're left wondering what marvelous, magical use they might have.

You wonder what she knows that you don't.

She makes me feel plain and simple, like the girl who comes to her,

begging for a job: stomping on the witch's one Achilles heel.

why did she take that oath?

We shall never know. And,

to whom was the oath given? And,

how does their magic rule over yours?

However, sometimes I think, when I grow older,

I want to be like her. In charge, with a ring on every finger

To have it all, and I noticed,

she doesn't have a man.

Is this solitary magical single mom,

the embodiment of feminism?

I could never help but take the side

of Ursula in the Little Mermaid

now, that was a stupid, spoiled girl.

She was begging to have her wishes exploited by a smart, cunning witch.

Is the lesson here really that love is dumb?

Chihiro for her parents, Ariel for her mysterious handsome prince on the land.

Ultimately, the witch of the bath house will just shrug and say,

"got rid of pipsqueak, I'm down a couple pigs, but oh well, tomorrow's another day."

And the witch of the sea, what happened to her,

It really wasn't fair. You see,

It's a law of Nature that idiots will lose, right?

And why was it important for her to be with a man she'd only seen once?

"True love" is compatibility that is built up over a long time.

Why do you expect it to be visual and instant?

Visual love is only lust.

The original moral of the story was that, just that,

Ariel was wrong.

So, as the witch goes back to her beautiful workplace,

content to provide spa services to MVP's,

she becomes, truly,

what I'd rather be someday,

than a stupid girl who can't make good decisions,

blinded too much

by love at first sight.

Hi, Rachael, GREAT read. Deep and thought-provoking. Made my imagination react with an abstract/poem, but I am too insecure to publish it. Maybe later. Want to talk about YOU! You are a super-talent--natural, honest, and sensible. And yes, very creative. Glad I found you and your hubs. Peace.
